Editing and proofreading are often the hidden services of the translation industry as they are generally included as standard as part of the overall translation costs. After all, no translator worth their salt would deliver a translation without a thorough proofread.

However, it is common practice for clients to request that a second translator review their translated document. This can be to double check for terminological accuracy or even to rework a text for a different context or audience.

Perhaps less obvious editing services that I provide are:

• cutting or lengthening a text as required
• re-writing a text in more or less technical language
• giving a text more impact or ‘punch’

If the document is a translation then I will only review the translated document (not the original).

Proofreading in French

Proofreading is a straightforward service that involves removing and correcting a range of common errors to ensure that a document fully conforms to French textual conventions.

For example, I will remove and correct:

• typos
• spelling errors
• capitalisation errors
• punctuation errors
• non-conventional use of upper and lower case characters
• errors in presenting figures

This type of proofreading is essential to conveying a message effectively in French, particularly where, as in the case of punctuation, the norms and resulting meaning can vary significantly across languages.

Revising/Reviewing French Translations

Revising and Reviewing are in essence the same service – simply UK and US terms respectively.

This service describes translation checking in the broadest sense.

I will compare and correct the original and translated documents to ensure that the translation:

• accurately conveys the meaning of the original
• makes no unnecessary omissions or additions
• is suitable for its intended purpose and audience
• uses correct, consistent and appropriate, subject-specific terminology throughout
• employs an appropriate or equivalent style or register
• is coherent

To ensure a quality service, I will only review translations in the subject areas I specialise in.
